Art Deco

From the devastation of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 1931 rose the iconic Art Deco cityscapes we see today.

Napier City is considered the Art Deco Capital with the highest concentration of art deco buildings anywhere in the world, while Hastings is also home to an impressive collection of Art Deco, Spanish Mission and Stripped Classical buildings. Take a tour in a vintage car or join a guided walk to discover the best examples of Art Deco buildings you’ll see anywhere.

A taste of what to expect

As Art Deco week unfolds in Napier (the heart of the era), you will be blown away as locals and visitors step back in time and embrace the sophistication and style that was the 1920s.

From vintage cars lining the streets, deco dressed punters in high spirits, long lunches, big bands and swing dancers, you can't help but immerse yourself and fall in love with the annual festivities. 'Aero' Deco is not to be missed with the much anticipated flyover of vintage aircrafts, and as the sun sets, join the crowds in the Sound Shell along Marine Parade for a bite to eat and some entertainment.

Art Deco guardians

The Art Deco Trust came out of a group formed in 1985 to protect the unique 1930s buildings that for 50 years had been unrecognised, undervalued and were under threat of demolition. Thanks to the advocacy of a new generation of courageous people with vision, these heritage buildings are now recognised, valued and protected.

The story of how Napier rose out of the rubble and ashes of the 1931 earthquake is just the compelling opening chapter of a bigger and equally intriguing story of how Napier people, New Zealanders and many world-wide fell in love with treasures that had been hiding in plain sight for 50 years. Join a guided tour to find out more.
